Cricket is a sport that originated in England and has become one of the most popular sports in the world.
It is played between two teams of eleven players. One side hits first, each batter taking turns visiting the field, trying to score as many runs as possible from the bowling alley on the other side. There are always two batters present on the field.
A run is scored when the batter at the front end hits the ball that is thrown at him far enough to allow him and his teammate to run side by side before the fielding team can pick up and return the ball. .
This continues until the batter is “out,” which can occur in a number of ways. When the ball is thrown at him from the other end of the field, he is guarding a wicket, which consists of three parallel sticks driven into the ground.
If the ball hits the wicket, the batter is out. Other ways it could be out: hitting the ball in the air so that it is caught without bouncing off one of the fielding sides, allowing the ball to hit your legs when it would have otherwise hit the wicket (“LBW or leg before of the wicket), the ball to hit his wicket again while trying to make a run before it reaches the other end of the field of play (run away).
At the highest levels, cricket is played by highly skilled professionals in stadiums packed with fanatical supporters.
The bats are made of finely crafted willow blocks and the balls are made of compressed cork covered by a stitched leather skin.
The balls are very hard and the best bowlers can reach speeds of over 90 miles per hour, which is amazing considering that bowlers cannot bend their bowling arm. As such, protective gear such as helmets, leg protectors, and a “box” (which protects the sensitive area of the body) is essential.
Cricket is a fantastic sport that can be played informally in a recreational area or competitively in leagues. It is an excellent vehicle for developing the moral fiber and character of young people, as always in cricket, the emphasis is on chivalrous conduct and fair play.
Cricket has the image of a leisurely walk in the park, but actually the fat-burning potential is good, consuming up to 400 calories per hour. It is an interesting and fascinating alternative to baseball.
